Earth bricks (CSEB)
Many people in rural Nepal dream about living in a brick house. This is usually very expensive and not feasible in remote villages. Earth Bricks can be made locally, which reduces the cost, and makes the dream of a Brick house possible.
Compressed Stabilized Earth Bricks (CSEB)
Earth Bricks, or interlocking bricks, is a strong and earthquake resistant building material suitable for villages in Nepal. It is a proven earthquake resistant technique which has been used for decades in earthquake affected areas in India, Pakistan and Iran. It allows the villagers to build high quality and earthquake resistant structures at low cost.
Earth Brick machines
Build up Nepal offer machines and training for Earth brick production and construction. We have machines of different types and sizes depending on your projects requirements.
Training for Earth bricks
We start with a basic training to teach the villagers how to select and mix soil, make bricks, quality check, making foundations and building walls etc. So the villagers learn to rebuild their own village.
What are Earth Bricks (CSEB) made of?
Earth Bricks consists of Soil, Sand and 10% Cement. The mixture is compressed in a machine which results in a compacted brick with high density. The bricks are then stacked and cured for 21 days – the cement sets and bonds with the sand stabilizing the brick. The soil compresses, which adds to the high density and strength. An Earth Brick has the same behavior and mechanical properties as concrete or ordinary fired bricks.
The precise composition of the soil should be around 50% sand, 20% clay, 15% gravel and 15% silt. Normally we don’t get this exact soil in a village, so first the soil is tested and then we add sand and gravel until we have this ratio. This way we can ensure the same bricks strength in any village.
Advantages of CSEB
- Earthquake resistant.
The bricks are reinforced by iron rebar inside the wall, both horizontally and vertically, making it highly earthquake resistant.
- Local material & opportunities
The bricks are made in the village using only Sand, Soil and 10% cement. It also creates opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
The villagers can make their own bricks saving cost and creating local jobs
- Eco friendly.
90% less CO2 emissions compared to fired bricks!
How much does it cost to build with Earth Bricks?
Every village is different and the cost therefore varies with local conditions. The cost depends on the following factors:
- The size of the building and amount of rooms
- The road access and time it takes to get there from Kathmandu
- If there is existing material, on site, that can be reused
- If the house owner/village will put in their own labor or hire labor

Earth Bricks CSEB is an earthquake resistant technique that has been used for many decades. The bricks made by our Heavy Duty machine (24x24x9cm) has a compressive strength of more than 10 MPA, which is better than A-grade bricks. Our smaller Interlocking machine has the same compressive strength as regular kiln fired bricks.
Sixteen schools of CSEB was built in Nepal before the April 2015 earthquake. All of them are undamaged by the earthquake (four are close to the epicenter in Dolhaka).
When building with Earth Bricks we reinforce the walls with rebar, both horizontally and vertically, adding to the strength and making the structure earthquake resistant.
Vertical rebar are put in each corner, at doors and windows and evenly spaced throughout the walls. This is then connected with horizontal seismic bands making the whole structure interconnected and earthquake resistant.
Government Approval of CSEB
After the Earthquake in 2015 CSEB has become very popular in Nepal. It offers the villagers a safe alternative at low cost. Build up Nepal have got approval for a non-load bearing school building from both DUDBC and Ministry of education. We have also got approval from the district office of Sindupalchowk, Kavre, Nuwakot, Gorkha and Dhading and started several projects in those regions.
We have not yet gotten approval for CSEB load bearing walls. We are working hard on this matter and expect an approval for CSEB load bearing walls very soon. Please contact us for updated information about approvals and designs.
CSEB has been recognized and approved by several other governments, among them:
- The government of Gujarat (India) – Post Earthquake reconstruction
- The government of Iran – Post Earthquake reconstruction
- The government of Tamil Nadu (India) – Post Tsunami reconstruction
- The government of Thailand – Post Tsunami reconstruction
- The government of New Mexico – United states
- The government of New Zealand
